Here in America, we are all familiar with the handful of diet fads that have been around ever since there was money to be made off of unhealthy citizens. Names like Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers, and Jenny Craig are popular in households with parents concerned about their family’s weight and health but have seemingly no common sense when it comes to nutrition. To the rest of the world, it probably seems like Americans, instead of stocking their kitchens with apples and pears, stock up on coupons for unhealthy food and frozen dinners. Instead of walking or biking to the local organic farmer’s market, Americans pile into their oversized SUV and drive off to gorge on questionable chain-restaurant buffets.
These are unfortunate stereotypes for a country rich in many handed-down culinary traditions from abroad. Obviously not every American is unhealthy or overweight, but the commercial diet fad culture of America is an obvious sign that things need to improve.
