Neutral Spanish
Understanding, after all, is the essence of deriving a “neutral” language. Whether in textual translation or verbal interpretation, bridging communication gaps is essential in today’s international community. Matters of law, personal safety, travel, and entertainment all rely on common points of understanding. Instances of tourists getting lost in a bad neighborhood could be avoided if only one word on a sign was ‘neutral’ and not local slang. Other such examples are common and can range from silly misunderstandings to tragic mistakes. Nevertheless, Neutral Spanish has its place in the world. Maybe it should be relegated to technical brochures and academic texts, or maybe it has a broader purpose.
